Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky Prayer Card – Patron for Courage Under Communist Persecution, Strength in Imprisonment & Faith When Tortured

$3.00

Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishop and confessor of the faith whose body was broken by prison camps, torture, and poisoning, yet whose spirit never surrendered to fear. He is honored in the Eastern Catholic tradition as a shepherd who carried Christ into labor camps, interrogation rooms, and underground churches. His feast day is commemorated on June 27.

People come to Blessed Vasyl when suffering feels relentless.
When trauma lingers after imprisonment or abuse.
When faith is targeted by powerful systems.
When the body remembers what the soul is trying to heal.
When they need strength to remain loyal to Christ after unspeakable trials.

Vasyl understands this kind of pain.

He lived through decades of Soviet persecution, watching his Church driven underground, his fellow clergy arrested, and believers forced into silence. He was imprisoned multiple times, subjected to brutal interrogations, and eventually poisoned for refusing to abandon his faith.

He did not renounce Christ.

He did not abandon his people.

He continued secretly ordaining priests and celebrating the sacraments in hiding.

Today, Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky is prayed to by Christians facing political oppression, survivors of imprisonment or torture, families living under hostile regimes, and anyone carrying deep trauma while trying to stay faithful. He is especially sought by those needing courage under persecution, healing after abuse, and spiritual strength when everything familiar has been stripped away.

This prayer card honors the bishop who teaches that even poisoned bodies can carry holy courage.

Each card is handmade in Austin and created to order. We do not keep stock, because every prayer card is treated as a unique devotional offering. They are printed on museum-quality photo paper, not cardstock, and each one is made during prayer. The saints are venerated throughout the entire process, and prayers are intentionally offered for the person who will receive the card. These are not mass-produced items. They are created slowly, reverently, and with spiritual intention, because every soul and every prayer matters.

  • Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky was born in 1903 in western Ukraine into a devout Greek Catholic family. Drawn early to religious life, he joined the Redemptorist order and was ordained a priest, dedicating himself to preaching, pastoral care, and strengthening believers during an increasingly hostile political climate.

His ministry unfolded during the rise of Soviet power.

After World War II, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was declared illegal. Bishops were arrested. Priests were imprisoned. Believers were forced to choose between abandoning their faith or facing severe punishment.

    Vasyl refused to comply.

    He continued serving secretly.

He celebrated the Divine Liturgy in homes.
    He heard confessions in whispers.
    He strengthened underground communities.

In 1945, he was arrested and sentenced to labor camps. He endured years of imprisonment under brutal conditions, marked by cold, hunger, and constant surveillance. After his release, he returned quietly to ministry, only to be arrested again.

In 1963, he was secretly consecrated a bishop, becoming a spiritual lifeline for the underground Church.

    His captors responded with violence.

    He was beaten.

    He was interrogated.

He was poisoned with chemicals that permanently damaged his body.

Despite this, he continued ministering until authorities finally forced him into exile. He arrived in Canada barely alive, suffering severe internal injuries from poisoning.

    He died in 1973.

    Not in comfort.

    In fidelity.

Later, his remains were found incorrupt, confirming what many already believed.

Grace had carried him through everything.

  • Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky is remembered as a powerful intercessor for those enduring persecution, imprisonment, and long-term trauma.
