Our Lady of Perpetual Help | Byzantine Marian Icon | Theotokos and Christ Child
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the most beloved and recognizable images of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Christian world. This ancient Byzantine icon presents the Mother of God holding the Christ Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel display the instruments of His future Passion.
The icon is filled with profound theological symbolism. The Christ Child turns toward the instruments of the Crucifixion and takes refuge in the arms of His Mother, grasping her hand as one sandal slips from His foot. Mary does not look toward the angels or even toward Christ. Her compassionate gaze is directed outward toward the person standing before the icon, while her hand points toward her Son. She comforts the faithful while directing every soul to Jesus Christ.
Above Christ appears the Archangel Gabriel bearing the Cross and nails of the Passion, while the Archangel Michael carries the lance, sponge, and vessel associated with the Crucifixion. The star upon Mary's veil recalls her role in announcing the coming of Christ, while the royal colors of the garments proclaim the dignity of the Mother of God and her divine Son.
According to the icon's traditional history, it came from the island of Crete and was eventually placed for public veneration in Rome. After disappearing from public view for many years, the icon was rediscovered and entrusted by Pope Pius IX to the Redemptorists in 1866. He charged them with making devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help known throughout the world. The original icon remains venerated today in the Church of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Rome.
