Our Lady of the Sign | Panagia Platytéra | Theotokos More Spacious Than the Heavens
Our Lady of the Sign, also known in the Byzantine tradition as the Panagia Platytéra, is one of the most ancient and theologically rich representations of the Theotokos. Mary is shown facing the faithful with her hands raised in the ancient orans, or prayer, position, while Christ Emmanuel appears before her within a medallion at her breast.
The icon proclaims the mystery of the Incarnation, when the eternal Son of God truly took flesh within the womb of the Virgin Mary. Its title, Our Lady of the Sign, recalls the prophecy of Isaiah: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Christ is not portrayed simply as an ordinary infant. He appears as Emmanuel, the eternal Word who became man, often raising His hand in blessing. The image therefore shows both the motherhood of the Theotokos and the divine identity of the Child whom she carried.
The Greek title Platytéra, meaning “more spacious” or “wider,” comes from the ancient liturgical description of the Theotokos as “more spacious than the heavens.” The heavens cannot contain the Creator, yet through the mystery of the Incarnation, Mary bore the uncontainable God within her womb.
For this reason, the Platytéra is frequently painted in the great apse above the altar of Byzantine and Orthodox churches. Positioned between the sanctuary below and the heavens represented above, the image powerfully proclaims that through the Theotokos, the Word became flesh and heaven and earth were joined in Jesus Christ.
Mary's raised hands also present her as a woman of prayer and as an image of the praying Church. She does not draw attention to herself alone. At the center of the icon is Christ, the promised Emmanuel, whom she received in faith and presents to the world.
The iconographic tradition is closely connected with the words of the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil, in which the Church praises the Theotokos because God made her womb more spacious than the heavens.
Our Lady of the Sign is especially meaningful for prayer concerning pregnancy, motherhood, children, families, the protection of the unborn, trust in God's will, and a deeper understanding of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ.
