Saint Aristakes was born in Caesarea of Cappadocia, the son of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. While his father labored to convert Armenia, Aristakes was formed in prayer, discipline, and ascetic life. He did not seek prominence, but was called into it when the needs of the Church demanded it.
He became the second Catholicos of Armenia, succeeding his father during a time when Christianity was still newly established and deeply contested. The faith had been declared, but it had not yet been fully rooted in the hearts of the people.
His most significant moment came at the Council of Nicaea in 325, where he represented the Armenian Church among bishops from across the Christian world. There, the Church confronted the Arian heresy and affirmed the divinity of Christ. Aristakes carried these decisions back to Armenia, helping to establish doctrinal clarity in a nation still forming its Christian identity.
His life ended in martyrdom after he rebuked moral corruption among those in authority, choosing truth over safety. Though the details are few, the witness is clear: he remained faithful to Christ to the very end.
