THE LIFE & STORY
Athanasius was born in Alexandria, Egypt, one of the most intellectually vibrant cities of the ancient world. As a young man, he received a strong classical education alongside deep Christian formation. His spiritual life developed early, shaped by contact with the Desert Fathers, especially Saint Anthony the Great, whose life Athanasius would later record and preserve for future generations.
He entered Church service young and quickly became secretary to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria. This placed him at the center of one of Christianity’s greatest crises: the Arian controversy.
Arius, a priest in Alexandria, began teaching that Jesus Christ was not fully divine, claiming that the Son was a created being rather than eternally God. This teaching spread rapidly, dividing bishops, confusing believers, and threatening the very heart of Christian faith.
Athanasius attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 as a young deacon. There, the Church formally declared that Christ is “of one essence with the Father.” This was not philosophical wordplay. It was the defense of salvation itself. If Christ were not truly God, humanity could not be truly redeemed.
Shortly afterward, Athanasius became Bishop of Alexandria.
What followed was nearly fifty years of relentless conflict.
Emperors alternated between supporting orthodoxy and favoring Arianism. Athanasius was accused of crimes he never committed. He was driven from his diocese repeatedly, forced into hiding, and hunted across deserts and cities. Soldiers searched monasteries for him. Political enemies forged documents against him. Even fellow bishops sometimes turned away.
At one point, it was said: “Athanasius against the world.”
He spent years living among monks, praying in caves, celebrating secret liturgies, and writing theological works while in exile. During these years, he composed many of his most important writings, including On the Incarnation, which remains foundational for Christian theology.
Despite exhaustion, danger, and emotional isolation, Athanasius never compromised the truth of Christ.
He returned to Alexandria multiple times, only to be expelled again. Yet each return strengthened the faithful. Each exile purified his resolve. He learned that spiritual authority is not rooted in safety, but in obedience.
He died peacefully in AD 373 after finally being restored to his see. His perseverance preserved the Nicene faith for future generations.
Without Athanasius, Christianity itself would look very different.
