THE LIFE & STORY
Saint Frumentius was born in Tyre and traveled with his uncle on a trading voyage that ended in disaster. Their ship was attacked along the African coast. The adults were killed. Frumentius and his brother were taken captive and brought before the king of Aksum in present-day Ethiopia.
Rather than imprisoning them, the king recognized their intelligence and placed them within his household.
Frumentius rose quietly in responsibility, eventually becoming tutor to the young heir, Prince Ezana.
He did not preach openly at first.
He waited.
He prayed.
He served faithfully.
As regent during Ezana’s youth, Frumentius encouraged Christian merchants to worship freely and slowly nurtured the small Christian presence already emerging in Aksum.
When Ezana reached maturity, Frumentius traveled to Alexandria to request a bishop for Ethiopia. Saint Athanasius himself consecrated Frumentius bishop and sent him back as shepherd of an entire nation.
He returned not as captive.
He returned as apostle.
Frumentius baptized King Ezana, established churches, ordained clergy, and laid the foundations of Ethiopian Christianity. Under his guidance, Ethiopia became one of the earliest officially Christian kingdoms in history.
He spent the remainder of his life teaching, organizing liturgical life, and strengthening believers across vast terrain.
He died peacefully after completing his mission.
Because of Abba Selama, Ethiopia received the Light of Christ.
His legacy still breathes through Ethiopian liturgy, fasting traditions, iconography, and prayer.
He teaches us that God can turn captivity into calling.
