Saint Gerasimos of Cephalonia Prayer Card – Patron for Mental Illness, Demonic Oppression & Families in Crisis

$3.00

Saint Gerasimos of Cephalonia is one of the most powerful yet tender healing saints of the Orthodox Christian world, venerated deeply in Eastern Orthodoxy and honored by Eastern Catholics who turn to him in moments of extreme emotional and spiritual distress. His feast days are celebrated on August 16 (his repose) and October 20 (the translation of his relics).

Gerasimos is not remembered for comfort.

He is remembered for entering suffering and staying there.

Born into a noble Greek family in the 16th century, Gerasimos abandoned wealth, security, and status to live as a wandering ascetic. He traveled through the Holy Land, lived in Jerusalem, served for years at sacred monasteries, and eventually withdrew into total obscurity. When he finally settled on the island of Cephalonia, he chose caves, silence, fasting, and prayer over recognition.

His holiness was forged underground.

Literally.

Gerasimos lived for years inside narrow caves, crawling through stone passages to pray in darkness. He slept on the earth. He ate little. He carried the weight of other people’s pain as his own. And from that hidden life emerged one of the Church’s most compassionate healers of mental illness and spiritual oppression.

Today, Saint Gerasimos is sought by families watching loved ones unravel emotionally, by parents desperate over children suffering mental instability, and by those experiencing spiritual attacks, intrusive thoughts, or overwhelming darkness. He is especially prayed to when medical answers fall short, when behavior becomes frightening, and when households feel spiritually shaken.

This prayer card honors his fierce gentleness and lifelong ministry to the broken.

Each card is handmade in Austin and created to order. We do not keep stock, because every prayer card is treated as a unique devotional offering. They are printed on museum-quality photo paper, not cardstock, and each one is made during prayer. The saints are venerated throughout the entire process, and prayers are intentionally offered for the person who will receive the card. These are not mass-produced items. They are created slowly, reverently, and with spiritual intention, because every soul and every prayer matters.

  • Saint Gerasimos was born in 1506 in the Peloponnese region of Greece to a noble Byzantine family. Despite his privileged upbringing, he felt called early to a life of radical devotion. He left home as a young man and began a long pilgrimage through the Orthodox world, seeking solitude, repentance, and deeper union with God.

He traveled to Constantinople, Mount Athos, and Jerusalem. In the Holy Land, he lived for over a decade, serving at sacred sites and immersing himself in prayer. Eventually, he was ordained a priest and continued his wandering ascetic life, refusing comfort and stability.

    Gerasimos did not seek followers.

    He sought God.

After years of travel, he arrived on the island of Cephalonia. There, he withdrew into caves near Omala, carving out tiny underground cells where he prayed for hours in total darkness. These caves still exist today, so narrow that visitors must crawl through them.

From this hidden life, Gerasimos slowly became known.

People began bringing the mentally ill, the violently disturbed, and those believed to be spiritually oppressed. Gerasimos received them with tenderness, fasting alongside them, praying over them, and staying with families through long nights of fear and exhaustion.

    He did not dramatize suffering.

    He absorbed it.

Witnesses describe him gently holding those in crisis, whispering prayers, placing them before God with unshakable calm. Many were restored. Others found peace even when healing came slowly.

He later founded a women’s monastery, where he lived in extreme simplicity, continuing his intercessory work until his repose in 1579.

After his death, his body was found incorrupt.

    He never left Cephalonia.

    He stayed.
