Saint Hermolaus lived in Nicomedia during the late third and early fourth centuries, at the height of Roman persecution against Christians. He was a priest serving quietly while waves of violence swept through the Church.
By the time Diocletian’s edicts were enforced, Hermolaus was already advanced in years. Most clergy in the region had been arrested or executed. Churches were burned. Believers were tortured publicly as warnings to others.
Hermolaus survived by remaining hidden.
He continued ministering in secret, hearing confessions, baptizing converts, and strengthening frightened Christians who gathered in small, silent groups. His priesthood became an underground lifeline for a shattered community.
It was during this period that he met Pantoleon, a gifted young doctor studying medicine in Nicomedia. Hermolaus patiently taught him Scripture, spoke to him about Christ, and helped him understand that healing is sacred work when offered in God’s name.
One day, Pantoleon witnessed a miracle through prayer: a child who had been bitten by a deadly snake was restored to life after Hermolaus called upon Christ. This moment transformed Pantoleon completely. He was baptized and devoted his medical practice to serving the poor freely.
Hermolaus had quietly formed a saint.
But persecution soon reached him.
Authorities discovered Hermolaus’s identity and arrested him along with two companions. Despite his age and frailty, he was interrogated harshly and ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods. He refused.
He was tortured.
He did not renounce Christ.
Saint Hermolaus was executed for his faith, sealing with blood the ministry he had lived in silence.
His legacy lived on through Saint Panteleimon and countless others strengthened by his courage.
