THE LIFE & STORY
Saint Seraphim was born Prokhor Moshnin in 1754 in Kursk, Russia, into a pious merchant family. Even as a child, he displayed unusual spiritual sensitivity. At the age of seven, he survived a serious fall from a bell tower under construction, an early moment many later viewed as providential.
His mother raised him with deep reverence for Christ, and by his teenage years Prokhor felt drawn irresistibly toward monastic life. Against the expectations of society and comfort, he entered the Sarov Monastery at the age of nineteen.
There he took the name Seraphim, meaning “burning one.”
Monastic life was not gentle. It was labor, fasting, long nights of prayer, and obedience. Saint Seraphim embraced it completely. Over time, he withdrew deeper into solitude, eventually living alone in a forest cell, sustained by prayer and minimal food. He endured years of physical illness, often so severe he could barely stand. At one point he was brutally attacked by robbers, left for dead with permanent spinal injuries.
He never sought justice.
He forgave.
After this assault, his health never fully recovered. He walked bent over for the rest of his life. Pain accompanied him daily. Yet instead of becoming hardened, Saint Seraphim grew softer, more radiant, more compassionate.
For a thousand days and nights he knelt on a stone in the forest, repeating the Jesus Prayer in silence.
This was not ascetic theater. It was interior warfare. He battled despair, loneliness, fear, and weakness. He entered into the depths of human fragility and learned to remain there with God.
Years later, after long silence, he emerged from solitude not as a distant mystic, but as a spiritual father to thousands. Pilgrims poured in seeking counsel. He received each person with warmth and called everyone “my joy.”
He taught that peace of heart was the foundation of spiritual life. Not achievement. Not perfection. Peace.
He spoke often about the Holy Spirit and how divine grace quietly transforms the soul. His humility was legendary. His presence brought calm to those tormented by anxiety and despair.
Saint Seraphim reposed in 1833, kneeling before an icon in prayer. Even in death, his posture remained one of surrender.
Soon miracles began to be reported at his grave. Healings multiplied. People found relief from depression, freedom from panic, and restoration from illness through his intercession.
He had become what he preached: a vessel of peace.
