THE LIFE & STORY OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS
Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonica in the ninth century, into a Greek-speaking Christian family living among Slavic populations. From early life, they were immersed in multiple languages and cultures, an experience that quietly prepared them for their future calling.
Methodius first pursued civil service before entering monastic life. Cyril, the younger brother, was exceptionally gifted intellectually and studied philosophy and theology in Constantinople. He became a teacher and scholar, earning respect for his brilliance, yet he carried a deep interior hunger for missionary work rather than academic prestige.
Their turning point came when the Byzantine emperor and patriarch asked them to evangelize the Slavic peoples of Great Moravia.
They did something radical.
Instead of forcing Greek or Latin worship, Cyril created a written alphabet for the Slavic language, now known as the Glagolitic script, which later evolved into Cyrillic. Together, the brothers translated Scripture and liturgical texts so ordinary people could hear the Gospel in their own tongue.
This decision changed history.
They taught that Christ belongs to every language, not only imperial ones.
Their work angered Western missionaries who believed Latin alone should be used for worship. Cyril and Methodius were accused of heresy, summoned to Rome, interrogated, and forced to defend their mission. Cyril died in Rome in 869 after taking monastic vows, offering his life quietly to God.
Methodius returned to the Slavic lands as archbishop, where persecution intensified.
He was imprisoned by political authorities for years, stripped of his office, and publicly humiliated. Even after release, he continued translating Scripture, ordaining clergy, and protecting the right of people to worship in their native language.
He died in 885, exhausted but faithful.
Their interior struggle was immense.
They carried responsibility for entire cultures.
They endured opposition from both church leaders and rulers.
They labored while misunderstood and isolated.Yet they never abandoned their mission.
Saints Cyril and Methodius teach that obedience to God sometimes means standing alone, and that preserving faith often requires suffering.
