Vintage Hand-Written Icon Egg on Brass and Wood Stand, Theotokos and Christ Child, Auction Find

$59.99

A handmade wooden egg bearing a hand-written icon of the Mother of God tenderly holding the Christ Child, their cheeks touching in the Tenderness style. Gold leaf is worked into the halos and garments, and the red, teal, and gold palette gives it real depth in person. On the reverse, an Eastern Christian / Orthodox-style cross is set in dark blue and gold against a field of red.

It stands on a turned wood and brass base and is topped with a brass finial, ready to display without a separate stand.

Included in the lot is a small round black lacquer trinket box with a lift-off lid, decorated by hand with cranes among reeds and a gold moon. It makes a handy keepsake or pill box.

We found both pieces together at auction. This lot was purchased whole and will be sold whole. We will not separate the egg from the box. Icon eggs written by hand and mounted like this are commonly listed well above $200 on their own, and we are offering the pair at a price meant to find a good home, not to chase a collector's markup.

Icon eggs are part of the Paschal tradition in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox world, where the egg speaks of new life and the Resurrection. This one belongs in an icon corner, on a home altar, or in a place of honor during Pascha.

  • Subject: Theotokos and Christ Child (Tenderness type)

  • Reverse: Orthodox-style cross

  • Materials: hand-written icon on wood, lacquered finish, gold leaf, brass and wood stand

  • Also included: small hand-decorated black lacquer trinket box with crane design

One of a kind. When it's gone, it's gone.
