San Damiano Cross 10 Inch Wall Crucifix | Franciscan Icon Cross, Rare Christian Item

$30.00

This is a replica of the San Damiano Cross, the Romanesque crucifix before which Saint Francis of Assisi heard the Lord call him to rebuild His Church. It measures about 10 inches by 7.5 inches, a good size for an icon corner, a bedroom wall, or a home office. One piece is available.

Christ stands upright with His eyes open and His arms outstretched. He is shown alive and reigning, not in agony, which reflects the Byzantine influence on the original. Around Him are the figures at the foot of the Cross, traditionally identified as the Virgin Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, and the centurion. Angels appear along the arms, and at the top the risen Christ ascends toward the hand of the Father. The image is set in deep red and purple tones with a textured gold-tone border.

According to the early Franciscan biographers, around 1205 Francis was praying before the original cross in the ruined chapel of San Damiano outside Assisi. He understood the Lord to tell him to go and repair His house, which was falling into ruin. Francis first took this to mean the crumbling chapel, then came to understand it as the whole Church. The original, made in Umbria around the twelfth century, is kept today in the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi.

Sold as pictured. Light wear to the gold border is visible in the photos.

This cross is for Franciscans and Franciscan Third Order members, anyone with a devotion to Saint Francis, and Eastern and Roman Catholics who want a crucifix with a living, risen Christ at the center of their prayer corner.
