Blessed Thomas Saleh was born in Lebanon in 1821 into a faithful Christian family. From an early age, he felt drawn toward religious life. He entered the Capuchin Franciscans, embracing simplicity, humility, and missionary outreach.
He was known for gentleness and steady devotion. As a priest, he devoted himself to preaching, catechesis, and strengthening Christian communities in the Middle East. Eventually, he was assigned to Damascus, where tensions between religious communities were growing dangerously volatile.
Thomas did not retreat.
He continued preaching.
He continued celebrating the sacraments.
He continued encouraging believers to remain faithful. When violence erupted in July of 1860, Christians were massacred in the streets. Churches were burned. Religious leaders were arrested. Thomas was captured and imprisoned along with other friars.
He was offered release.
All he had to do was deny Christ.
He refused.
Imprisoned and beaten, he continued praying and encouraging fellow captives. According to witnesses, he remained calm, forgiving, and composed even as execution approached.
He was eventually killed for refusing to abandon his faith.
He died as a friar.
He died as a Christian.
He died as a martyr.
