Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk Prayer Candle | Patron of Belarus | Orthodox and Catholic Candle 13.75 oz | Gift for Teachers and Scholars
This Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk prayer candle honors the twelfth century Belarusian princess who became a nun, a scribe, and the founder of a convent. It is a fitting gift for a teacher, a scholar, a Belarusian family, or a woman discerning her calling.
About Saint Euphrosyne. Euphrosyne was born in Polotsk around 1104 into the ruling Rurik family. She refused marriage and became a nun, copying books and giving her earnings to the poor. Around 1128, at the request of Bishop Elias of Polotsk, she founded the convent of the Savior and the Transfiguration at Seltse, where she taught young women to copy books, sing, and sew. The Church of the Holy Savior there, completed in 1161, still stands.
She made a pilgrimage to Constantinople and the Holy Land late in life. She is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches and has been a patron saint of Belarus since 1984.
