About Saint Gianna. Gianna Beretta Molla was born on October 4, 1922, in Magenta, Italy, and became a pediatrician. She married the engineer Pietro Molla on September 24, 1955. In 1961, during her fourth pregnancy, doctors found a fibroma. She chose the surgery that would protect her child. Her daughter Gianna Emanuela was born on April 21, 1962, and Gianna died a week later, on April 28, at age 39.

Pope John Paul II canonized her on May 16, 2004. She is a patron of mothers, wives, physicians, families, and the unborn. Pietro Molla is not a canonized saint.
