Saint Job was born around 1551 in western Ukraine into a devout Orthodox family. From an early age, he was drawn to silence and prayer. Still young, he entered monastic life, giving himself completely to Christ through obedience, fasting, and labor.
Even as a novice, he displayed remarkable spiritual seriousness.
History soon placed heavy burdens upon him.
During Job’s lifetime, Orthodoxy in the region faced intense pressure from political authorities and religious movements attempting to suppress Eastern Christian worship. Churches were seized. Clergy were threatened. Monasteries became targets.
Job eventually became abbot of Pochaev Monastery, a spiritual stronghold set on a hilltop. From there, he guided monks, instructed pilgrims, preserved Orthodox teaching, and strengthened believers through pastoral care and spiritual writing.
Opposition followed him relentlessly.
He faced lawsuits meant to confiscate monastery lands.
He endured harassment from powerful figures.
He was summoned repeatedly to hostile courts.Job answered every attack the same way.
He returned to prayer.
He fasted.
He worked with his hands.
He refused bitterness.
Under his leadership, Pochaev did not collapse. It flourished spiritually. Monks multiplied. Pilgrims arrived seeking healing and counsel. Job became known as a gentle elder whose authority came not from position, but from holiness.
After decades of struggle, he reposed peacefully in 1651. Later, his relics were found incorrupt, confirming what many already knew.
God had honored his perseverance.
