About Saint Jovan Vladimir. Jovan Vladimir ruled the Serbian principality of Duklja from about the year 1000 and is remembered as pious, just, and peaceful. After Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria conquered Duklja, he was held prisoner and then restored as a vassal. He died on May 22, 1016, in Prespa. He had come to the court of Ivan Vladislav under a pledge of safe conduct, sealed with a wooden cross, and was beheaded as he left the church after prayer.

He is venerated as a martyr and as patron of the city of Bar in Montenegro. Icons usually show him as a crowned ruler holding a cross and his own severed head.

Choose this candle for a Serbian, Montenegrin, or Albanian Orthodox family, a church in Bar or Ohrid, or someone praying through betrayal.
