Saint Nikephoros the Leper Prayer Candle | Greek Orthodox Monk Who Lived with Hansen's Disease | For Chronic Illness | Orthodox Candle 13.75 oz
This Saint Nikephoros the Leper prayer candle honors the Greek Orthodox monk whose holiness grew within the suffering of Hansen's disease. It is a gentle Orthodox gift for someone living with long-term illness and for those who care for them.
About Saint Nikephoros. Nikephoros, also written Nicephorus or Nikiforos, was a twentieth century Greek Orthodox monk. He was born Nicholas Tzanakakis on Crete in 1890 and was orphaned young. Hansen's disease, historically called leprosy, appeared when he was a teenager. He spent much of his adult life among other people with the disease on Chios and later at the Saint Barbara hospital in Athens.
He became known for prayer, gentleness, chanting, and a remarkable ability to console visitors who came with their own suffering. In his later years his sight was badly damaged, his hands were stiff, and his legs were paralyzed. His Troparion compares his patient endurance of sickness with that of Job.
Choose this candle for a person with a chronic illness, a caregiver or nurse, a patient in long-term care, or a friend who feels isolated by sickness.
