Saint Porphyrios was born Evangelos Bairaktaris in 1906 in Evia, Greece, into a poor farming family. From early childhood he felt drawn to God with unusual intensity. At only thirteen years old, he left home and traveled alone to Mount Athos, where he entered monastic life under the guidance of two humble elders.
His early years were marked by extreme physical labor and spiritual discipline. He worked long hours in chapels and vineyards while praying continuously. This strain permanently damaged his health, leaving him frail for the rest of his life. Yet even in weakness, his heart remained joyful and open.
He was tonsured a monk and later ordained a priest, eventually serving as chaplain at a large Athens hospital. There he spent decades ministering to the sick, dying, and emotionally broken. He listened patiently to countless confessions, counseled families in crisis, and comforted those facing death.
During this time, God granted him extraordinary spiritual perception.
He could often see into the inner state of people’s hearts, understand unspoken struggles, and offer precise spiritual guidance. Yet he never emphasized these gifts. He spoke constantly about Christ’s love, urging people not to obsess over darkness but to focus on God’s beauty.
His own body became a place of suffering.
He endured cancer, kidney failure, ulcers, heart disease, and repeated surgeries. Despite constant pain, he continued welcoming visitors, often late into the night, offering gentle counsel with remarkable attentiveness.
In his final years, he withdrew to Kafsokalyvia on Mount Athos, preparing quietly for death. He reposed in peace in 1991, leaving behind spiritual children across the world.
His legacy is simple.
Love Christ.
Trust Christ.
Let Christ heal you.
