About Saint Silouan. Silouan was born on January 17, 1866, in a village of the Tambov Governorate in Russia. After his military service he went to Mount Athos at the age of 27 and became a monk at the Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon. He reposed there on September 24, 1938.
He was known for praying and weeping for the whole world as if for himself, and for the high value he placed on love for enemies. His disciple, Archimandrite Sophrony, wrote his biography, "Saint Silouan the Athonite," which carried his teaching to the West. The Ecumenical Patriarchate glorified him in the late 1980s.
