Saints Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyabya Prayer Candle | Russian Orthodox Warrior Monks of Kulikovo | Icon Candle 13.75 oz | Orthodox Gift
This Saints Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyabya prayer candle honors the two monks of Saint Sergius of Radonezh who rode with Prince Dmitry Donskoy to the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. It is a striking Russian Orthodox gift for the home icon corner.
About the warrior monks. Tradition says that Saint Sergius of Radonezh blessed his disciples Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyabya, who were monks of the Great Schema, to join Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy against the Golden Horde. At the opening of the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, Peresvet fought single combat with the Tatar champion Chelubey, also called Temir-Mirza, and the two killed each other in the first charge. Russian legend says Peresvet stayed in the saddle.
Oslyabya is recorded as living until 1398. The two monks were buried together at the Simonov Monastery in Moscow. The card image on this candle is based on an icon of the two saints on white horses, holding their weapons and wearing monastic schema.
