Saints Silenced by Church Authorities Prayer Card Bundle: 9 Handmade Cards
Some saints were sidelined, deposed, exiled, restricted or misjudged by the very authorities they served, and were later vindicated by the Church. This bundle gathers nine of them and tells how each was silenced.
Each was restricted, deposed, exiled or accused by authorities, and was later honored by the Church.
This bundle includes 9 different handmade prayer cards, one of each saint listed below.
The 9 cards in this bundle
- Saint Padre Pio: Investigated by Church authorities after the stigmata drew huge attention. In 1931 restrictions barred him from hearing confessions and from celebrating Mass publicly. He accepted the decision in obedience and kept celebrating Mass in private.
- Saint John Chrysostom: Slandered, deposed and driven into exile after confronting imperial excess and urging that church wealth go to hospitals and the poor. He died on a forced march.
- Saint Athanasius of Alexandria: Exiled five times, hunted by imperial soldiers, slandered publicly and abandoned by many former allies for defending the full divinity of Christ.
- Saint Nektarios of Aegina: Removed from office as a bishop without explanation, whispered about behind closed doors and denied opportunities because of lies. He bore it in quiet endurance and is now honored as a saint.
- Saint Gregory Palamas: Attacked for years in a controversy over hesychast prayer, with ecclesiastical conflict, imprisonment and even captivity by the Turks. Councils in 1341, 1347 and 1351 affirmed his teaching.
- Saints Cyril and Methodius: Misunderstood by authorities and criticized by fellow believers while they brought the faith to the Slavs, and later honored as Apostles to the Slavs.
- Saint Hildegard of Bingen: Her convent was placed under an interdict in 1178 after she buried a man whom local prelates considered excommunicated, so the sacraments and singing were forbidden there until it was lifted in 1179.
- Saint Severus of Antioch: Patriarch of Antioch in a violent era when emperors reshaped doctrine by decree and bishops were removed by force. He was deposed and spent the rest of his life in exile.
- Saint Avraamy (Abraham) of Smolensk: A stern preacher of repentance whose asceticism unsettled the comfortable. Whispers became accusations, and fellow Christians rejected and falsely accused him.
Each card features sacred artwork on the front and a short biography with a prayer on the back. Every card is handmade and laminated in Austin, Texas, and a prayer is said for the person who will receive it.
