Icons of Christ

Pantocrator • Divine Mercy • The Holy Face • The Mandylion • The Transfiguration

Before any saint, there is Christ himself, and some of the oldest and most theologically direct designs in this collection put his own image front and center. The Pantocrator, "Ruler of All," is the classical Byzantine depiction of Christ in majesty, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding the Gospel. The Divine Mercy image, revealed to Saint Faustina Kowalska in the 20th century, carries the words "Jesus, I Trust in You" beneath rays of red and pale light representing blood and water flowing from his pierced side. The Shroud of Turin and the Holy Mandylion both point to the same ancient tradition: an image of Christ's face not made by human hands, and the Transfiguration recalls the moment his divine glory broke visibly through on Mount Tabor.

Marian Devotion & Apparitions

Guadalupe • Zeitoun • Our Lady of the Sign

Marian apparitions carry a unique kind of evidentiary weight in Christian devotion: real times, real places, real witnesses, sometimes photographed. Our Lady of Guadalupe's 1531 appearance to Saint Juan Diego in Mexico remains one of the most consequential Marian events in Church history, credited with the conversion of millions across the Americas. Our Lady of Zeitoun's 1968 apparition over a church in Cairo was witnessed by enormous crowds, including non-Christians, and captured in photographs still studied today. Our Lady of the Sign depicts an ancient Orthodox iconographic type of Mary with arms raised in prayer, Christ enclosed within her.

Warrior Saints & Archangels

Michael • George • Joan of Arc • Joseph

Spiritual warfare is not a metaphor Christian tradition invented recently. Saint Michael the Archangel, whose name means "who is like God," is the commander of the heavenly host and the figure most directly invoked against evil in Christian prayer. Saint George's defeat of the dragon has stood for sixteen centuries as the Church's most enduring image of courage confronting evil head-on. Joan of Arc led armies at nineteen and died refusing to recant her faith. Saint Joseph, quiet as his role in the Gospels is, has been invoked as "Terror of Demons" in the Litany of Saint Joseph for centuries, a title that surprises people who only know him as gentle and silent.

The Jesus Prayer & the Orthodox Cross

"Lord Jesus Christ, Have Mercy" • The Three-Bar Cross • The Heart of Orthobro Style

This is the section most closely tied to the growing "orthobro" movement, and for good reason: these two symbols, the Jesus Prayer and the three-bar Orthodox cross, are the most immediately recognizable markers of traditional Eastern Christian identity in apparel today. The Jesus Prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner," is a short, repeated prayer rooted in the ancient monastic tradition of the Egyptian and Sinai deserts, traditionally prayed on a knotted prayer rope as a way of fulfilling Saint Paul's call to "pray without ceasing." The three-bar cross carries its own layered meaning: the top bar for Pilate's inscription, the main bar for Christ's outstretched arms, and the slanted bottom bar representing the footrest and the two thieves crucified beside him, one who repented and rose, one who did not.

Monastic & Mystic Saints

Seraphim • Paisios • Gabriel • Moses the Black • Nicholas • Hildegard

These are the saints most closely tied to the deep interior life of prayer, and several of them are figures who transformed radically before becoming who they're remembered as. Saint Seraphim of Sarov's counsel to "acquire the Spirit of Peace, and a thousand souls around you will be saved" remains one of the most quoted lines in modern Orthodoxy. Saint Paisios of Mount Athos was a 20th-century monk whose plainspoken wisdom continues shaping Orthodox spiritual life today. Saint Moses the Black went from outlaw to one of the most venerated of the Egyptian desert fathers. Saint Nicholas, better known for Myra and Christmas legend, was above all a wonderworking bishop. Saint Hildegard of Bingen was a visionary, composer, and Doctor of the Church whose influence reaches well beyond religious circles.

Maronite & Syriac Heritage

Charbel • Rafqa • Qadishat Aloho • The Maronite Cross

The Maronite Church, the Eastern Catholic tradition centered in Lebanon, carries a liturgical heritage stretching back to the ancient Church of Antioch, worshipping in Syriac, a dialect of Aramaic, the language tradition associates with Jesus himself. Saint Charbel Makhlouf and Saint Rafqa are the two most beloved Maronite saints of the modern era, both credited with extraordinary healing and endurance through suffering. Qadishat Aloho, "Holy God" in Syriac, opens the Trisagion hymn sung in the Maronite Divine Liturgy. The Maronite cross itself marks a heritage rooted in an unbroken claim to communion with Rome stretching back further than the Great Schism.

Beloved Western Saints

Padre Pio • Francis • Anthony • Thérèse

Some saints have become so beloved across the Catholic world that they need almost no introduction. Padre Pio bore the stigmata for fifty years and reportedly read souls in the confessional with uncanny precision. Saint Francis of Assisi remains the patron most associated with animals, poverty, and radical simplicity. Saint Anthony of Padua, often paired with Francis, is the saint most invoked for lost things. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, the "Little Flower," died at twenty-four and left behind a "little way" of spiritual childhood that has shaped Catholic spirituality for over a century.

Sacred Symbols & Deeper Theology

The Ladder of Divine Ascent • The Holy Trinity

Two designs here go beyond a single saint or apparition into the deeper structure of Christian spiritual life itself. The Ladder of Divine Ascent, from Saint John Climacus's classic work of the same name, depicts monks climbing thirty rungs toward Christ while demons pull at them from below, a vivid image of the real spiritual struggle behind every step of growth in holiness. Andrei Rublev's Holy Trinity icon, painted in the 15th century, remains the most theologically celebrated depiction of the Trinity in all of Christian art, three angelic figures seated around a table in perfect, quiet communion.

Faith for Her

Catherine of Siena • Augustine, Quoted

Two designs speak directly and simply, built around lines that have outlasted the centuries they were written in. Saint Catherine of Siena, a Doctor of the Church who advised popes and reformed a divided Church in the 14th century, is remembered for the line "Be who you were created to be, and you will set the world on fire." Saint Augustine's reflections on love in his own Confessions have shaped Christian thought on the subject for over 1,600 years.

The Icon of Christ

The Center of Every Icon Corner

Every icon corner begins here. The Pantocrator, "Ruler of All," shows Christ in majesty, one hand raised in blessing, the Gospel in the other, and is traditionally the first icon placed and the one given the position of highest honor. The Divine Mercy image adds a more recent devotional layer, Christ's own words to Saint Faustina Kowalska, "Jesus, I Trust in You." A Jesus Prayer canvas keeps the words of the heart's constant prayer visibly present in the room.

The Theotokos

Placed Beside the Icon of Christ

Traditionally the second icon placed in any corner, right beside Christ's. Each Marian icon type carries its own story: the Vladimir icon's tender cheek-to-cheek embrace, the Hodegetria "showing the way" toward her Son, Our Lady of the Sign with arms raised in prayer, Guadalupe's 1531 apparition in Mexico, Zeitoun's 1968 apparition over Cairo, and the Kupyatitskaya and Zhirovitskaya icons, both tied to specific miraculous appearances in Belarusian Orthodox history.

Warrior Saints & Guardians

For Protection Over the Household

Many households add a guardian to their corner, a saint invoked specifically for protection over the home. Saint Michael the Archangel, commander of the heavenly host, is the most traditional choice. The Desert Fathers & Mothers

The Roots of All Christian Monasticism

Every monastic tradition in Christianity traces back to the Egyptian and Syrian deserts of the third and fourth centuries. Saint Anthony the Great is remembered as the father of Christian monasticism. Abba Poemen the Great was among the most quoted of the Desert Fathers in the beloved Sayings collection. Saint Mary of Egypt's decades of solitary repentance make her a model for Great Lent. Saint Simeon Stylites lived atop a pillar for 37 years. Saint Isaac the Syrian's writings on mercy and stillness remain deeply influential in Orthodox spirituality today.

Modern Elders of the Holy Mountain

Living Memory of Orthodox Sanctity

Some saints in this collection lived recently enough that people who knew them are still alive today. Saint Porphyrios and Saint Paisios the Athonite were both 20th-century monks of Mount Athos whose direct, practical spiritual counsel continues shaping Orthodox life worldwide. Saint Nektarios of Aegina remains one of the most beloved modern Greek saints, invoked especially by cancer patients. Saint Seraphim of Sarov, though from the 19th century, belongs in this same spirit of accessible, living sanctity.

The Maronite Catholic Tradition

For Maronite Catholic households, or anyone drawn to Lebanon's remarkable Christian heritage, this collection includes the tradition's most beloved figures. Saint Charbel Makhlouf, available in two distinct designs, remains the most visited pilgrimage saint in the Middle East. Saint Rafqa bore decades of blindness with radical peace. Saint John Maron founded the Maronite Patriarchate itself, and Saint Nimatullah al-Hardini rounds out the trio of great 19th-century Lebanese monastics.

Modern Witnesses

Sanctity Within Living Memory

These saints and figures lived close enough to the present that their causes for canonization drew on photographs, letters, and living witnesses. Mother Teresa of Calcutta needs little introduction. Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych died a martyr for Church unity. Venerable Takashi and Midori Nagai's story includes surviving the Nagasaki atomic bombing. Saint Mariam Baouardy, the "Little Arab," was a Palestinian Carmelite mystic canonized in 2015.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Readers Ask Most Often, Across All Three Categories
The three-bar cross, sometimes called the Russian Orthodox cross or Suppedaneum cross, has three horizontal beams. The top short bar represents the plaque bearing the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Christ's head. The main bar is where his arms were stretched. The bottom slanted bar represents the footrest his feet were nailed to, tilted to symbolize the two thieves crucified beside him, one who repented and rose toward heaven, and one who did not.
Orthobro is an informal, widely used term for a growing movement of especially younger men embracing traditional Eastern Orthodox Christianity, often expressed visibly through apparel, prayer ropes, and a renewed interest in ascetic and monastic spirituality. Apparel featuring the three-bar cross and the Jesus Prayer has become closely associated with this movement.
Wearing images of saints, icons, and Christian symbols on clothing has a long history rooted in the same impulse behind wearing a cross necklace or carrying a prayer card: keeping a visible, physical reminder of one's faith close at hand throughout the day. Many people find that wearing a saint whose story speaks to their own struggles or aspirations functions as a quiet, ongoing form of devotion and conversation-starter about their faith.
The Jesus Prayer is a short, repeated prayer central to Eastern Christian spirituality: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." Rooted in the ancient monastic tradition of the Egyptian and Sinai deserts, it is traditionally prayed repeatedly, often with a knotted prayer rope, as a way of fulfilling Saint Paul's instruction to "pray without ceasing."
Qadishat Aloho is Syriac for "Holy God," the opening words of the Trisagion hymn: "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us." It is sung in the Maronite Divine Liturgy and other West Syriac traditions in the Syriac language, a dialect of Aramaic, connecting worshippers audibly to the language of the ancient Church of Antioch.
A Latin or Catholic cross typically has a single horizontal beam. The Orthodox or Byzantine three-bar cross adds a short top bar for Pilate's inscription and a slanted bottom bar representing the footrest and the two thieves. Some Eastern Catholic traditions, including Maronite and Melkite communities, also use the three-bar cross or their own distinct cross forms reflecting their particular liturgical heritage.
An icon corner, sometimes called a "beautiful corner" or krasny ugol in Russian tradition, is a dedicated space in an Orthodox or Eastern Catholic home set aside for prayer, typically featuring an icon of Christ, an icon of the Theotokos, and often additional icons of patron or favorite saints. Traditionally placed in a home's east-facing corner, it serves as a focal point for daily prayer and is often where a family gathers for morning and evening prayers.
The icon of Christ, most traditionally the Pantocrator ("Ruler of All"), is placed at the center or place of highest honor in an icon corner. An icon of the Theotokos is customarily placed immediately beside it, most often to the icon of Christ's left as you face it. Additional icons of patron saints, favorite saints, or feast days can be arranged around these two central icons.
Yes. Eastern Catholic traditions, including Maronite, Melkite, Ukrainian Greek Catholic, and other sui iuris churches, share the same icon-centered devotional culture as Eastern Orthodoxy, since both traditions descend from the same ancient Christian East. A Maronite or Melkite household icon corner might feature saints specific to that tradition, such as Saint Charbel or Saint Rafqa, alongside the icon of Christ and the Theotokos.
Traditional iconography holds hand-painted icons in special regard, often blessed by a priest, but a printed reproduction of a real icon is a legitimate and widely used way to bring devotional art into a home, particularly for those beginning to build a prayer space or unable to commission a hand-painted icon. Many people have their printed icons blessed by a priest after acquiring them.
Beyond Christ and the Theotokos, families often include icons of their own patron saints (the saints they or their children are named after), the patron saint of their parish, and saints connected to their particular ethnic or liturgical heritage, such as Maronite, Slavic, Greek, or Syriac saints. Many households also add icons of saints associated with specific needs, such as healing or protection.
A mug featuring the confirmand's saint, or a widely loved patron of courage and youth such as Joan of Arc, makes a practical, everyday gift they'll actually use, unlike a card or a one-time gift that gets set aside. Look for a saint connected to the confirmation name they've chosen, or a saint whose story speaks to the stage of life they're entering.
Gifts tied to Mary, Joseph, or the child's namesake saint are traditional and meaningful choices for a baptism. A mug isn't for the baby, of course, but makes a warm gift for new parents or godparents to use during the early, sleep-deprived months, a small daily reminder of the day their child was welcomed into the faith.
Our ceramic mugs are generally microwave and dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended to preserve the print quality and vibrancy of the artwork over time.
Most mugs in this collection are 11oz ceramic, a standard everyday coffee mug size, with some designs also available in a larger 15oz option for bigger coffee or tea drinkers.
A lit candle is traditionally understood as a prayer that continues after you've physically left, a small, ongoing offering of light and intention. It's why candles are lit for the sick, the deceased, and specific petitions, the flame keeps that prayer visibly present even once you've walked away.
A rosary is used primarily in the Catholic tradition to pray the Rosary, a structured meditation on the life of Christ counted on beads grouped in sets of ten (decades). A prayer rope (chotki or komboskini) is the Eastern Christian equivalent, traditionally knotted rather than beaded, used mainly to repeat the Jesus Prayer. Both serve the same basic purpose, keeping count during repeated prayer, within two related but distinct devotional traditions.
