Chapter One: Heaven’s Design for Love

In the beginning, before sin entered the world, God created marriage as the first covenant between human beings. It was part of His design from the start, not something humanity invented later. The Book of Genesis tells us that God made man and woman in His own image. He created them equal in dignity and different in ways that complete each other, forming a unity meant for communion with God and with one another. “Male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). Marriage was the first way God allowed His love to be reflected in human life.

After forming Adam, God looked upon him and said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18). Adam lived among the creatures, but none of them could meet the longing in his heart for someone like himself. So God placed Adam into a deep sleep, formed Eve from his side, and presented her to him. Recognizing her as one who shared his own nature, Adam rejoiced. Scripture then gives us the foundation of marriage: “Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). From the beginning, marriage was created as a covenant of unity, a sacred bond rooted in God’s own plan for His people.

Because God created marriage, its meaning comes from Him. Marriage is not a human arrangement or a temporary union based on convenience. It is a holy covenant. A contract exchanges goods or services. A covenant exchanges persons. In marriage, husband and wife do not offer conditions. They offer themselves. The Church teaches that marriage has two main purposes: the good of the spouses, helping each other grow in virtue and holiness, and the gift of children, sharing in God’s creative work by bringing new life into the world.

Marriage also reflects the very nature of God. The Holy Trinity is a communion of love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When husband and wife become one flesh, their unity reflects this divine communion in a limited but real way. Their love becomes a sign of God’s love. This is why Jesus later said, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:6). The unity of marriage is meant to be lifelong and unbreakable, held together by God’s grace.

Before sin entered the world, Adam and Eve lived in complete openness with each other. Scripture describes them as “naked and not ashamed” (Genesis 2:25). This shows the purity of their relationship. They had no fear, no distrust, no selfishness. Their life together was one of perfect transparency and harmony. Their love reflected the love they received from God, and their daily life was an act of worship. Marriage, in its original form, was a place of peace and grace.

Throughout the Old Testament, God uses the image of marriage to describe His relationship with His people. Israel is called His bride. When the people turn away, the prophets describe it as a breaking of the covenant. Yet God remains faithful. Through the prophet Hosea, God speaks with tenderness and promises restoration: “I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her… And in that day, says the Lord, you will call me, ‘My husband’” (Hosea 2:14, 16). God promises an everlasting covenant: “I will betroth you to me forever… in steadfast love and in mercy” (Hosea 2:19). The love God desires in marriage mirrors the love He offers to us.

In the New Testament, this promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He comes as the Bridegroom who gives His life for His Bride, the Church, which is us. Saint Paul explains that the union of husband and wife is a “great mystery,” pointing to Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:32). Jesus raised marriage to the dignity of a sacrament, giving spouses the grace to live out their covenant in His strength. His first public miracle took place at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11). By transforming water into wine, Jesus blessed that marriage and revealed that He intends to be present in the marriages of His followers. Through His death and Resurrection, He established the New Covenant, uniting Himself to the Church with a love that is

faithful, total, and eternal.

Your marriage participates in this story. When you prepare to give your vows, you are joining a covenant that stretches back to creation and forward into eternity. God’s design for marriage becomes the design for your life together. Marriage teaches us how to love as God loves. This is why the Church defends the sanctity of marriage so strongly. Its meaning is sacred, not cultural. Its purpose is holy.

Knowing this brings encouragement and responsibility. Encouragement, because God Himself sustains your marriage with His grace. Responsibility, because you are called to reflect Christ’s love in your union. A love that is free, total, faithful, and fruitful. God does not leave you without help. Through the sacrament of Matrimony, He strengthens your natural love with His supernatural grace. He gives you the ability to forgive, to remain faithful, to grow in patience, and to persevere in love through every season of life. Marriage is a holy vocation. When you trust in God’s grace, you will find that He walks with you at every step.

As you continue through this book, remember that your marriage is a gift from our Heavenly Father. Its purpose and meaning come from Him. The world often treats marriage lightly or misunderstands its value, but your marriage was created by God to be a source of life, joy, and holiness. It is meant to reflect His love into the world and to be a mirror of Christ's relationship with His church. When you embrace God’s intent for your marriage, you open your life to His blessings and allow Him to use your union for His glory.

Heaven’s design for love is not only beautiful, but holy. By saying “yes” to that design, you allow your marriage to become what God intended from the beginning: a reflection of His love, shining through your home and guiding you both, and your family toward holiness.
